WHY ARE ENERGY DRINKS NOT A GOOD IDEA DURING YOUR FESTIVAL?

The festival season has started again! This year about 1,000 festivals are organized in the Netherlands with a total of 18 million visitors. This means that the Dutchman goes to a festival between two and five times. After Germany, the Netherlands is the most populous country in terms of festivals. So we are a diehard festival people. But how do we keep that up?

Disadvantages of energy drinks

In addition to water and beer, festival visitors also drink a lot of energy drinks. These are usually consumed for the purpose of getting a quick refresher, but they contain a high level of sugar and therefore a lot of calories. There are as many as seven sugar cubes in one energy drink. So they do give you that boost at first, but when these sugars are consumed, you will actually experience a sugar crash and feel tired. That is of course not what you want! Ultimately, frequent use of energy drinks can cause obesity. And don't forget that it costs you an average of 2.5 coins and it's also bad for your teeth.

Energy drinks contain the amino acid taurine in addition to caffeine. Among other things, taurine plays a role in regulating heart rate and brain fluid levels. In our normal daily diet, this substance occurs in low doses. If you take an energy drink, the amount increases tenfold. Long-term intake of taurine can even lead to (too) low blood sugar, digestive problems, dehydration, blood thinning, constipation, abnormal heart rate, strokes and hypertension.

Caffeine provides extra energy

Stick to caffeine! Many studies have shown that caffeine, if used sensibly, does lead to the desired booster effect. Caffeine causes levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine in our bodies to rise, activating our central nervous system. You feel more energetic, alert, fitter and happier.
